Thus, he was never captured except so briefly that his enemies didn’t have time to unmask him. It was a conceit of the television show that the Lone Ranger/Moore was never, ever depicted without his mask. Moore cultivated a squeaky-clean image consistent with the kind of upright character he played, and he also began making personal appearances, urging children who flocked to them not to swear, drink, smoke, use drugs, or “dip” when they danced. The series made Moore a star, and in some ways he and the character became one. Until then, Moore’s acting career was mostly B-westerns, but he had the chiseled features and physique one associates with action heroes. They settled on a part-time stuntman, actor, and male model named Clayton Moore. On television, the producers needed someone to play the main character, because many radio actors simply did not have faces made for the moving screen. The radio serial made a successful transition to television beginning in 1949. The Lone Ranger always wore a black domino mask as a disguise - the kind that covered only his eyes and nose. (Indeed, so identified was the music with the show that, for many years, a “highbrow” was someone who could listen to that music and not think of the Lone Ranger.) Each week, the Lone Ranger would spur his white stallion, Silver, into action with a cry of “Hi-Yo Silver! Away!” as the rousing march from “The William Tell Overture” played in the background. Thereafter, Tonto and the Lone Ranger teamed up - first to capture the criminals who killed his fellow Rangers, and then to pursue other Old West evildoers.
Five were killed, but one “lone” Ranger left for dead survived, and was then found and nursed to health by the man who became his “faithful Indian companion,” Tonto. According to the character’s back-story, a posse of six Texas Rangers were pursuing a gang of desperadoes when they were ambushed. The now-iconic character, the Lone Ranger, was created for a radio serial in 1933.
